5 Must-Visit Fall Trails Near Rexburg

Outdoor adventures and opportunities surround Rexburg. The small college town exists as the gateway to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons—two incredibly beautiful and unique national parks.

If you are looking for a break from homework and a chance to enjoy the fall weather, you can't pass up the hiking trails around Rexburg. While we recommend visiting both major national parks while you're at BYU-I, there are a few lesser-known places you wouldn't want to miss either. If you are looking to explore more of Idaho's natural beauty and stay a little closer to home, here are a few of the area's best obscure fall hikes:

Cress Creek

Located a short 25 minutes outside of Rexburg, Cress Creek trail is perfect for a roommate outing or FHE activity. The hike is about 1.5 miles round trip with a small incline. Benches and picnic tables along the trail make the walk easy. The area is beautiful all year, but the autumn colors are particularly vibrant in late September and early October.

Webster's Dam

Webster's Dam is a popular spot for locals and students alike. If you're in Rexburg, it takes about 30 minutes to get to the trailhead of this 2.7-mile hike. Shaded nearly the whole way—on colder days, you'll want to bring a jacket. Near the end of the nearly three-mile hike, you can enjoy the oranges and reds of fall near a picturesque bridge.

Kelly Canyon Trail

Located about 45 minutes outside of Rexburg, the Kelly Canyon Trail is a 3.7-mile loop. There isn't much shade on this hike, but the fall views are breathtaking. This hike tends to get pretty busy on the weekends, so you might consider trying this trail out during the week.

West Farnes Mountain

This short one-mile trail is worth the hour-long drive from Rexburg. West Farnes Mountain is relatively unknown, so if you're looking for a place to get away from homework and find peace, this is the perfect trail. The fall colors are at their best in late September through early November.

Mesa Falls

About an hour outside of Rexburg, this spot is popular for its stunning waterfalls. There are several trail options in the Mesa Falls area. Whether you prefer a short-paved walk or a steep descent, the area appeals to hikers of all experience levels.

Whether you want to escape the stresses of college for a few hours or hang out with friends, getting outdoors is a great way to embrace the new season!
