BYU-Idaho Approved Student Housing Explained

The ins and outs of BYU-Idaho's approved student housing standards can be tricky to understand. Why does the university regulate housing? What are the specific regulations and requirements? What should you know before signing an approved housing lease? All these questions can be answered in this simple guide to BYU-Idaho student housing.

Firstly, BYU-Idaho requires all unmarried students to live in approved student housing complexes. The college has set limits and expectations around this rule:

  • All BYU-Idaho students under 27 years old must live in approved student housing unless they live with their parents.
  • Students who are living in Rexburg but not attending school during their off track must live in approved housing.
  • Students can not live in approved housing before they officially start at BYU-Idaho.
  • Students pursuing a degree through BYU-Pathway Worldwide and Continuing Education can not live in approved housing.
  • Students who lose their BYU-Idaho enrollment status can not live in approved student housing. However, they are still responsible for their housing contract fees if they don't sell their contract.

While this may seem like a unique requirement, the school has a list of reasons why they see the arrangement as necessary and beneficial for students.

Streamlined Housing Contracts

BYU-Idaho requires that all approved housing complexes have the same base housing contract. This makes it easier for the college to manage housing disputes and for students to understand what is expected of them and what they can expect from their complex.

University Integrity

To pursue a degree at BYU-Idaho, students have to agree to and sign an honor code. This code invites students to live a moral life while at the college. To ensure consistency, the university asks approved student housing to follow and expect the same level of conduct from their tenants. These apartment standards include:

  • Entertainment and Media: Listening and/or watching things that are vulgar, immoral, violent, illegal, or pornographic is prohibited.
  • Alcohol: No alcoholic substance, closed or open, is allowed.
  • Firearms and Weapons: Storage, use, or possession of any type of weapon is prohibited.
  • Curfew: All residents must be inside their apartments by midnight. Friday nights are the only exception to this rule. On Fridays, the curfew is pushed back by one hour, and all students are expected to be back inside by 1 a.m.
  • Visitors: No member of the opposite sex is allowed to visit past curfew hours or when only one tenant is present. Members of the opposite sex cannot enter bedrooms, stay overnight, or use the shower. If a public restroom is unavailable, visitors of the opposite sex can only use the apartment bathrooms with the permission of all present roommates.

Student Safety and Well-being

The university has vetted and approved all student housing. Each complex has passed the college's standards for student safety and security. Approved housing also ensures that students are paired with other students who are pursuing degrees. This atmosphere provides a good environment for friendships to grow and flourish.

While there is no shortage of approved housing options in Rexburg, spots at the most well-known and accommodating complexes fill up fast.
