Rexburg is a small town, but for most students, a walk to the town's biggest grocery store is just too much of a stretch. Walmart sits on the very north side of the miniature city. The store is a six-mile round trip from the Cedars (not counting all the walking you do at the store). While a six-mile outing may not seem terrible, keep in mind that for three of those miles, you'll be weighed down by milk, frozen pizza, and other college staples.
If you are living in Rexburg without a car or want to save on gas, you're in luck! The city has free transportation to the town's biggest store, courtesy of Walmart and the Salt Lake Express. It's called the Walmart Shuttle, and it runs from 11 am to 9:30 pm every day.
The Rexburg Walmart Shuttle has nine stops:
- Walmart
- East Manwaring Center Roundabout
- Aspen Village Apartments
- Centre Square Apartments
- The Gates Apartments
- Camden Apartments
- Colonial House Apartments
- BYU-Idaho Hart Building (benches in front)
- BYU-Idaho Parking Lot (across from the Snow Building)
(The BYU-Idaho Parking Lot and Hart Building locations are the closest to the Cedars.)
The best way to plan a trip to Walmart via the shuttle is to go to Salt Lake Express' website. There, you can view the approximate times for each stop on the bus route. You can also view a map that tracks where the bus is; the feed is live, so this is the most reliable method for catching the shuttle.
The bus takes about 45 minutes to complete its route, which means you must finish your shopping in 45 minutes or hang out at Walmart for an hour and a half or longer. At any rate, it's probably a good idea to be sure to plan your shopping excursion during a time when your schedule provides wiggle room.
There are a few things you can do to make your shuttle shopping experience smooth. Here are a few Walmart Shuttle tips and tricks:
- Travel Light: Avoid bringing your backpack full of textbooks. It will take up unnecessary space and make the walk back to your apartment that much harder.
- Arrive 5 Minutes Early: When relying on public transportation, it's always a good idea to arrive a few minutes early.
- Do Homework on the Bus: It may sound impractical, but in college, making the most of your time is important. Whether reading a textbook on your phone or reviewing your digital notes, using the 45-minute drive to catch up on coursework can go a long way.
- Create a List Beforehand: Creating a menu and grocery list before going to the store can help you stay on track while shopping.
- Don't Go Hungry: It's cliche, but shopping while hungry is never a good idea. You might end up with a few more groceries than you can carry.
- Bring Reusable Bags: These make the short walk from the bus stop to your apartment easier. Reusable bags are sturdier, bigger, and more convenient.
